Ram Jaane [translation: "Ram Knows" or "God Knows"] is a 1995 Indian Bollywood movie directed by Rajiv Mehra about an unnamed kid [portrayed by Shahrukh Khan] who grows up to become a gangster. He uses the name Ram Jaane after meeting with a priest who in response to the kid asking about his name said "Ram Jaane" [God knows]. The movie ranks the 8th highest grossing Hindi movie of 1995 and is also the fourth time Shahrukh Khan is playing a negative role after Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam. The film is inspired by James Cagneys Angels With Dirty Faces.
Abandoned at a very young age, an unnamed youth faces taunts about his name and religion. He asks a priest what his name is. The priest answers "Ram Jaane" [God knows], which the youth accepts this as his name. Grown up Ram Jaane [Shahrukh Khan] does grow up to be a career thief and criminal, and ultimately a feared gangster. He is in love with his childhood sweetheart, Bela [Juhi Chawla], and believes that she too loves him. When other gangsters decide to take-over the building in which Bela lives, Ram decides to oppose them, so as to impress Bela, and get her to marry him. Ram only ends up antagonizing the gangsters and their men, and finds out that Bela dislikes him, and wants to marry another young man by the name of Murli [Vivek Mushran].
